Headliner Sophisticated Savages

Koloa Plantation Days 2026 headliner Sophisticated Savages poster

Introducing Moloka‘i’s Augie B. “Lopaka” Colón Jr., one of the top Latin-Afro-Cuban- Hawaiian percussionists (and bird/animal caller in the World). A multi Na Hōkū Hanohano Award winner, Lopaka is an energy explosion on and off the stage, adding a unique ingredient to every band, show, or musical project he has ever been a part of.

His vibrant percussive sounds and exotic animal calls will now come center stage for his latest project “Lopaka Colón’s Sophisticated Savages.”Expect a musical journey through Polynesia led by Master of Ceremonies Lopaka Colón as he guides you through generations of his music and his influences. Featuring the music of Pure Heart, Colón, the Ka‘au Crater Boys, Willie K’s Barefoot Natives, while weaving together Hawaiian classics, Latin percussion jams and the Polynesian sounds of exotica music (Martin Denny, and Arthur Lyman), that Lopaka’s Father helped make famous.

Lopaka has been (and is) an integral component to so many bands and musicians in Hawai‘i such as; Pure Heart (with Jake Shimabukuro and Jon Yamasato), Colón (with Jake Shimabukuro and Guy Cruz), the Henry Kapono Band, Don Tiki, Waitiki 7, The Makana Trio, Willie K’s Barefoot Natives, and Mick Fleetwood’s Island Rumours Band and many more.

Joining Lopaka is a sophisticated group of Hawaii’s finest musicians, featuring:

Lopaka Colon (MC and percussion)
Starr Kahaliki (vocals)
Kala‘e Camarillo (guitar and vocals)
Jon Yamasato (vocals and guitar)
Rand Anderson (steel and B-bender guitar)
Girish Varma (bass and violin)
Stew Sherman (drums)
Kit Ebersbach (keys)
AJ Kumuhara (vocals)

All award winning talented musicians in their own right. Join Augie Colón Jr., or better known as “Lopaka”, as he and his “Sophisticated Savages” take you on a rhythmic excursion across exotic Polynesia.

Koloa Plantation Days Parade
Koloa Plantation Days parade

Horseback and walking units, floral floats, vintage cars, and decorated vehicles are in a great hometown parade that celebrates aspects of the workers’ camps in plantation towns. Each camp had its ethnic identity, customs, foods, games and sports, music and dance. This is a festival signature event, don't miss it!

The people walking, on decorated floats, on horseback, and in decorated vehicles will do their best to capture some aspect of plantation life. They will have colorful costumes, perhaps play music or dance, or showcase recreational activities — baseball, chicken fights, fishing, to name a few – or their ethnic heritage. Others will capture memories of the sugar era, when sugar plantations thrived and many residents worked for or with the sugar industry.

Competition for parade awards is intense and people from the resorts, businesses and community groups are very creative, so you can expect the unexpected. From costumes to decorations and choreography, they work for weeks and up to parade day to make their ideas become reality. While most of us relax and enjoy the parade, the judges seated along the parade route will intently scrutinize the units. In the afternoon, the awards for the best in each category are announced at Koloa ballpark.

Road Closures & Parking

PARADE ROUTE will commence at Koloa School, proceed north onto Po`ipu Road, turning right at the intersection of Po`ipu Road and Koloa Road and finally turning left on to Maluhia Road, finishing at the Anne Knudsen (Koloa) Ballpark.
